2014/34/EUExVeritas Notified to the New ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU

ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU Replaced 94/9/EC April 20th 2016

ExVeritas has undertaken successful assessment for accreditation as a notified body under Directive 2014/34/EU relating to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX). The Secretary of State accepted the recommendation from UKAS and appointed ExVeritas as a Notified Body under the New ATEX Directive

ExVeritas is listed on NANDO (only listed bodes can issue ATEX NB Certification)

ExVeritas was appointed in respect of the conformity assessment procedures set out in the Directive for the following product categories:

  • For Annexes Ill, IV, V, VI, VII, IX
  • (Modules B,C1,D, E, F and G)
  • Group I M1 and M2
  • Group II Cat 1, 2 and 3

The ATEX Directive 94/9/EC has been updated (replaced) with the new ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, this new directive came into compliance on the 20th of April 2016. It is also important to note that type Examination Certificates to the 94/9/EC will still remain to be valid, but all the manufacturer has to change is the (EU) Declaration of Conformity to the new directive.

All Notified bodies had to re-apply for accreditation to the new directive and there is much more emphasis placed on ensuring a consistent level of quality and performance involved in the assessment, notification and monitoring of Notified Bodies.

The directive also mentions ensuring trace ability of a product throughout the whole supply chain to make market surveillance simpler and more efficient and clarifies requirements for importers to make sure that products they place on the market comply with this directive. Equipment under this directive should now have only one EU declaration of conformity that covers all the requirement of this directive and other applicable directives as well.

There are no significant changes concerning the manufacturers as there are no changes to the Essential Health and Safety Requirements in Annex II of the new directive, therefore the directive does not affect the standards that are used, and there are no significant changes in the remainder of the Annex’s regarding the conformity assessment procedures for manufacturers.

It should be noted however that there has been very significant changes to the ‘Standards’ over the last 20 years, and that the new Installation  Standard (60079-14) requires installers to install equipment certified to the latest 60079 series standards when available, and if you use older certified equipment (‘EEx’ equipment rather than the later ‘Ex’ equipment for example) then the installer/user must risk assess the equipment before use.
